Background of the Study
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being incorporated into various aspects of healthcare, with one of its most promising applications being in patient triage systems. Patient triage, the process of prioritizing patients based on the severity of their conditions, is critical in emergency and urgent care settings where timely interventions can save lives. Traditional triage methods, which often rely on human judgment, can be prone to errors, especially in busy healthcare environments. The integration of AI in patient triage systems can help streamline this process, reducing errors, improving decision-making, and ensuring that patients receive the appropriate level of care in a timely manner.

In Kaduna State, the healthcare system faces challenges related to high patient volumes, inadequate infrastructure, and resource limitations. The adoption of AI in patient triage could help address some of these issues by automating the process of assessing patient conditions and prioritizing treatment based on severity. However, while AI has shown potential in improving triage outcomes, the integration of AI technology in hospitals in Kaduna State remains limited. Factors such as infrastructure gaps, lack of skilled personnel, and high implementation costs pose challenges to widespread adoption.

This study will explore the use of AI in patient triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State, evaluating the benefits, challenges, and effectiveness of AI-based systems compared to traditional triage methods.

Statement of the Problem
Hospitals in Kaduna State, like many other regions in Nigeria, face significant challenges in effectively managing high patient volumes and prioritizing care based on medical urgency. The current reliance on traditional triage methods can result in delays and errors in patient management, leading to worsened health outcomes. While AI-based triage systems have the potential to improve efficiency and accuracy, there is limited research on their implementation in hospitals in Kaduna State. This study seeks to examine the extent to which AI is used in patient triage systems in Kaduna hospitals and assess its effectiveness in improving patient care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the use of artificial intelligence in patient triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State.

  2. To compare the effectiveness of AI-based triage systems with traditional triage methods in hospitals in Kaduna State.

  3. To identify the challenges and barriers to implementing AI in patient triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent is artificial intelligence used in patient triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State?

  2. How do AI-based triage systems compare to traditional triage methods in terms of accuracy and patient outcomes in hospitals in Kaduna State?

  3. What are the challenges and barriers to implementing AI-based triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based triage systems are more accurate and efficient than traditional triage methods in hospitals in Kaduna State.

  2. The use of AI in patient triage leads to improved patient outcomes and more timely interventions in hospitals in Kaduna State.

  3. Barriers such as high implementation costs and lack of technical expertise hinder the adoption of AI-based triage systems in hospitals in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hospitals in Kaduna State that have implemented or are in the process of implementing AI-based triage systems. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of these systems and compare them to traditional triage methods. Limitations may include the availability of AI-based systems in only a few hospitals and the difficulty in accessing data related to patient outcomes.
